Junior Team Play

In 2012 we had three teams in three age categories in the Aegon Junior Team Tennis. We also ran 'Road to Wimbledon' competitions. The main tournament for juniors each summmer is the Junior Open Tournament. You can navigate to them using the buttons on the left.

Aegon Junior Tennis 2012

In 2012 Abingdon Lawn Tennis Club enter three teams in the Aegon Junior Team Tennis Competition. Teams were entered in the 12 and under, 14 and under and 16 and under categories. The competition requires each player to compete in a singles match against their opposite number, then pairing up for a doubles match.

12 and Under

The U12 Squad The squad of players comprised Liam Kay, Guy Pearce, Joe Healy, Gleb Kuznetsov, George Webber, and Luke Lynch. The boys started with an away match at Thame, followed by a home match against Bicester, and finally away at The Oxfordshire (formally Esporta). All of the players were 10.2 rated players meaning they had not played any LTA competitions before. However, they came away victorious on all three occasions. Liam and Gleb formed a formidable first pair, playing in all three matches, and winning all their singles and doubles matches. They were ably supported by Joe, who paired up with Guy for the first match, George for the second, and Luke for the third. Joe won 2 of his 3 singles matches, and with his 3 partners won 2 of his 3 doubles matches. As a consequence Abingdon topped their division.

14 and Under

The U14 Squad This squad comprised Tom Buckle, Rory Parsons, Tom Sherman, Sachin Patel and Michael Jiang. They too played league style matches against three other clubs, Thame, Norham Gardens and Witney/Lower Windrush. All of the players were 10.2 rated players apart from Tom Buckle who at the time had an 8.2 rating. Tom Buckle and Sachin played in all three matches. Michael, Rory and Tom Sherman played two each. The boys sailed through their first matches against Thame and Norham Gardens wining both 6-0. Witney/Lower Windrush presented a tougher challenge. Abingdon however prevailed winning the tie 4-2. Over the course of the competition, Sachin Patel was the outstanding player winning every game he played. Again the boys won their division.

16 and Under

This team had a tough series of matches. None of the boys had played competitions before so Luke Naylor, Vikesh Patel, Joe Woodham and Daniel Page all played exceptionally well. Special mention should go to Vikesh who won the only set of the 16 and under competition for Abingdon. Joe Woodham ran his heart out in the match against Kingston Bagpuise. Daniel Page gallantly stepped in at the last minute to ensure the game against North Oxford could go ahead, whilst Luke Naylor stuck to his guns and played most matches, competing to the end.
