It is now 72 years since the first Preston Bowl
Competition. This year the Preston Bowl Competition took place on
Sunday 13th August. The weather looked very unpromising at the start
of the day, but the rain held off for the tournament. Ten pairs
entered, but one pair was unable to play because of injury. This
year, there was the extra incentive of a cash prize for the winners
from the sponsors, Tonks Brothers.

Two round robins were played. Pool 1 was won by Jonathan Maskens
and Emma Tolson, with close runners up being youngsters Stephanie Prew
and Tom Barrett. Pool 2 was won convincingly by siblings Kate and Ben
Calnan who only conceded four games in four matches.
Ali Morgan and Paul Valentine ("Ali 'n Vali") played the Pool 1 winners in the first
semi final, but Jonathan and Emma proved too strong, beating them
6-3. In the other semi-final , Kate and Ben beat Stephanie and Tom
6-3.
The final was neck and neck right up to the last game. At five
games all, Kate was serving for the match. It was 30-all, and the
spectators were on the edge of their seats. Kate and Ben won the next
two points and the match was theirs.
Tom said "The food made the day worthwhile, even though we lost
out in the semis". Thanks from everyone for superb food from Helen
Asbury.
