Another sunny Finals' Day saw some tight matches played. David Soanes convincingly bagged his fifth Mens Singles title by beating Pete Druett 6-4 6-2. The Ladies Singles Final was a much closer affair. Toni Cox took a closely fought first set 7-5, but Helen Asbury came back strongly to easily take the second set 6-2. Helen started the third set strongly, but then succumbed to cramp and Antonia Cox overtook her to take the third set and championship 7-5 2-6 6-3.
In the Mens Doubles Martin Steen-Tolle played extremely accurate and powerful tennis. This gave some consolation to his partner Pete Druett after Pete's defeat in the singles as the beat the holders David Soanes and Ole Andersen in straight sets, 6-4 7-5.
In the Ladies Doubles, Helen Green and Katheryn Schutterlin proved
too strong for Linda Boston and Joy Browning, winning 6-3 6-2. The
Handicap Doubles Final saw Linda in action again, this time with
Graham Hensby against Sue Aldington and her husband, Neil Boston. This
"Battle of the Bostons" saw Linda and Graham win a long and closely
contested match 6-3 2-6 6-4. Dave Spencer tortured his mother before
overcoming Will Cullen 2-6 6-3 6-4 for the Men's Under 21 singles in
almost a copy-cat repeat of last years final between the same two
player. Dawn Torgesen and I (eventually!), having survived a couple of match points in the semi-final, secured our third mixed
title by beating Katheryn Schutterlin and Miles Elliot 6-4 5-7 6-2.
